How a formal shirt should fit

Most men who "can never find a shirt that fits" are not unusual — they simply fall between the standard sizes. A ready-made shirt is graded from one sample body; if your neck, shoulders, chest and arms are not in that sample's exact ratio, something will be off. Here is what a well-fitted formal shirt looks like.
The checklist
- Collar: buttoned, you can slide one or two fingers inside — not more. The collar points sit flat under a jacket or on their own.
- Shoulders: the shoulder seam sits on the edge of your shoulder bone, not down your arm and not up on your neck.
- Chest: no pulling into an "X" across the buttons when you sit or reach forward, and no gaping between buttons.
- Waist: follows your shape without billowing above the belt — the most common fault in ready-made shirts on slimmer or athletic men.
- Sleeves: the cuff reaches the base of your thumb with arms by your side, and does not ride up your forearm when you reach.
- Length: long enough to stay tucked when you sit and lift your arms; if worn untucked, it ends around mid-zip.
