How trousers should fit around the waist and legs
A GUVY guide · 2026-10-11
Ready-made trousers are sold by waist size, but the waist is only one of several measurements that decide whether they fit. A man with a 34 waist can have a slim or a heavy seat, strong or slim thighs, and a short or long leg — one size cannot cover all of them.
What good fit looks like
- Waist: sits comfortably without a belt doing the work, and without folding over when you sit.
- Seat: smooth across the back — no sagging fabric below the seat and no horizontal pulling lines.
- Thigh: room to sit and climb stairs without the fabric gripping, but no flapping excess.
- Taper: narrows gently from knee to ankle in proportion to your shoe and your build.
- Length: the hem just touches the shoe — a slight break for formal trousers, little or none for a modern look.
Made-to-measure trousers at GUVY
At GUVY trousers are cut from your own measurements, taken in person at the shop. You also choose the details: a long or short belt (waistband), the pockets (two cross pockets, one or two back pockets, a waist pocket), and the finishing — casual or formal press, with bottom hemming or a bottom machine stitch.
