Shirt collar and placket styles — which to choose
A GUVY guide · 2026-10-11
The collar frames your face and decides how formal a shirt looks. With a made-to-measure shirt you choose it. These are the collar and placket options GUVY offers, and what each is best for.
Collars
- Cut Away — points swept far back. Very modern, best with a tie or worn open on a strong-jawed face.
- Spread — points angled outwards. The most versatile business collar; works with or without a tie.
- Small Spread — a narrower spread, neat and contemporary for slimmer faces and lighter ties.
- Straight Point — classic, points facing down. Lengthens a round face; traditional office look.
- Small Point — a shorter classic point for a lighter, cleaner look.
- Point 2 Button — a point collar with a two-button stand, so it stands taller and stays crisp open-necked.
- Button Down — points buttoned to the shirt. Relaxed and smart-casual; holds its shape without a tie.
- Club — rounded points. Distinctive and slightly vintage.
- Band — no collar points at all; a modern, minimal look without a tie.
Plackets
- American placket — the classic folded strip of fabric down the front with visible stitching. Structured and formal.
- French placket — no visible strip; a clean front. Minimal and modern.
